hey guys! so i have a '96 limited 4.0 4x4 which was my first truck and i've driven it daily untill almost a month ago when i bought a 2004 excursion.
recently its had some issues, head gasket went again, more tranny issues so i'm done with the V6 period. i have a V8 donor truck and i'm ready to rip into this project since i have a nice daily driver now.
heres some current pics
the rear bumper on there is off a '97 EB i'm customizing the stock bumper
so the plan is over the summer to swap in the 5.0/built tranny and rebuilt t-case. also swap out the torsion bars for the heavy B-rated bars and some lift rear springs. hopfully by this time next year it will be running with a 5.0 i'll update as things move along.
You should be able to use the 5.0 ECM, plug the 5.0 engine harness and trans harness into your vehicle harness. Don't know about the AWD-think it needs the 5.0's GEM. If you can use your 96's transfer case you're probably better off - the AWD has no low range to my knowledge.

actuly the fully mechanical(sp) AWD t-case is the only easly installed t-case..i figured i'd keep that part stock plus i like how it handles in our other V8 AWD 5.0 explorers.
you can add a manual shift 4x t-case out of a f-150 but it takes some work and i'd rather have the AWD anyway.
