Hi everyone, grate site. I just got myself a 98 f150 5.4, 4x4 ext cab auto, 188k km. It is the source of 2 sleepless nights. First the next day I discovered small patch of oil on my driveway, secondly the engine light is burned so I'm suspecting more troubles, and on top of that the brakes pedal feels kind of soft.
Other than that I love the truck, the truck is mainly going to be a weekend/hunting vehicle. I'm not a mechanic so my questions are:
should I wait and see, or should I start attacking the problems?
what kind of repair manuals woukd you recommend - is the subscription to Alldata a good idea?
thanks
A subscription to Alldata would be a very good idea. Your soft brake pedal could be caused by a few things. Your truck should have rear drums. Pull the drums and check for brake fluid leaking from the wheel cyl. also check the rear brake adjustment when putting the drums back on. A leaking axle seal could also make your pedal feel soft. Do you mean your Engine light is on all the time? or is it burnt out? You can by a low cost scan tool at most auto parts stores to check for the cause of the engine light. Don't let the problems go to long or it will end up costing more money to fix.
The 98 f-150 is a good truck and the 5.4l is a very good engine
yes it is i bought a 98 F150 with the 5.4L march 17th and i love it...anyways soft brake pedal could be lots of different things wheel cylinder could be leaking, or brakes werent bled enough, or brakes could be worn down, or the adjuster in drums might be too loose. i believe you can rent a scanner from oriellys or auto zone dont remember which but i give them a check (just incase you break it) then you get your check back when you bring the scanner back to the store. and alldata is a great buy we use it at our shop at school all the time.
