Start up problem

I bought a 81 F250 460 Automatic about a month ago and it starts fine 9 out of 10 times. When it fails to start I can hear the starter turning over but the engine does not, then I just turn the ignition switch again and it fires right up. Battery is new and charging system seems to be working fine. Is this because the starter is not engaging the flexplate?

Maybe the Bendix gear isn't engaging or maybe the flexplate has some worn teeth. I would take the starter out and look at the teeth on the flexplate.

sounds like the bendix to me as well.and while you have the starter check your flexplate to.better to be safe than sorry.
