Finally, after 6 months of wondering, worrying, and scraping dough together, my Slick is back on the road! Thanks to all who helped me out on this project, especially to 46Y-Block for all of the good advice and sticking it out with me on this one. This is the most ambitious gearhead project I have attempted to date, and it turned out to be a success.
After priming the engine, installing spark plugs, etc, the moment I had been waiting for finally arrived. I lit up a smoke, grabbed a cool drink and turned the key. She came to life with a roar. Set the timing, broke in the cam for 20 minutes. NO LEAKS! I was amazed. Anyway, thanks to all for helping through this project.
Good that ya got er done. We need all the experts we can get. As I need to at least refresh my 272 this summer. I don't suppose anyone has a usable crank lying around for cheap? Anyway just drive the wheels off of her this summer as ya got all winter ta work on it.
I don't like Fram filters either, I got it for free and just used it for the inital start-up and cam break-in. I normally use WIX.
Got 100 miles put on her this weekend (been out of town the past 2 weeks). Runs pretty good. There is some hesitation that I can't get figured out, I think I might need a carb guru to adjust on the new Holley. Other than that, the water temp is steady and the oil pressure stays around 50.
Cool! Nice work and nice truck! I'm looking at going through my 292 maybe next year. It's well worn, but starts right up even after sitting for weeks sometimes, and runs smoothly. I'm not anxious to jump into it right away because I do feel it's reliable; it would be nice to have no leaks though. Congrats on that!
