87 f-150

I bought a 87 f-150 thats in great shape, everything works but my temp gauge worked on the drive home but quit working. I found another gauge and it does not work either. I replaced the coolant sensor and still does not work. You turn the key on and it pegs to the left side. any help would be appreciated.

Trace the wire all the way back to the gauge. Somewhere along the way theres a short in the wire. It could be chafed, cut, or about to break. That would be the first thing that i would check. Also, are you sure that the engine is comming up to proper operating temperature? Start it up and put the heater on and make sure its producing adequate heat. A faulty thermostat stuck open will prevent the engine from getting to the proper temp. Its somthing to look at especially if the truck has sat for a long time.

Hope this helps!

I checked the voltage to the coolant sensor which is new and it was between 4 and 5 volts. I wonder if it could be a ground problem?

it could be, If it is a 2 wire sensor, jump the two wires together and see if it peggs the needle all the way to hot. if it dosent move, then it must be in the wiring since you tried another gauge that elimanited that as the problem or the sensor since you changed that also. Did you verify that the engine is comming up to the correct temperature? But try jumping the wires together with another wire or a paper clip to see if the gauge moves.
