Some of you have seen the threads I started last week on the truck I just bought as a project truck. Well, the deeper i get to working on this thing, the more I find out about her. Kinda fun, but this time a lil aggravating.
Previous owner swapped in an NP205 transcase. I think all of the 80-86's came with the NP208, but not 100% sure on that. I was putting in the driveshaft this weeked, and it bolted up fine to the axle.
Well, when I went to bolt it up to the transfer case, the reason the driveshaft was not in the truck when I bought was discovered. The yoke on the transfer case is to small to accept the U-joints that fits the axle.
So, my question to you guys is this. I have an NP208 laying around and I was wondering without having to take the Yoke of the transfer case that is in the truck, cause it will not be easy, are the splines on the front output shafts the same? Can I just exchange the transfer cases front yokes?
I don't know about yokes interchanging, but you can get u loints with 2 different size cups
the length is different as well. I think the cup size is the same, the problem is in the length.
if you draw a plus sign + one the horizontal line is the one in the drive shaft, and the verticle one would attach at the transfer case, the transfer case one would have to be shorter than the other one.

They have u-joints that will take care of that as well. Just carefully measure, or take your driveshaft and your yoke down to the Napa store, and they will help you find the right u-joint. You would not believe all the different kinds they have in the spicer book. Just tear the cover off the box and throw it in the glove box so you will know what model number you need if you ever need to replace it later on.

Just measure your yokes for the shaft and transfer case, and head to the local NAPA (or whatever your local store is) they can get you one to fit. My brother went thru the same thing with his chebby when he swaped the axles in his 1/2 ton for some out of a 3/4. He measured accross the yokes, and also the cap size, and Napa had one in stock that had the two different sized arms (?), and I think it was only about $25.
