Good catch! I followed the link and found this youtube video about Paul Mantz, famous movie stunt pilot. He was Amelia Earheart's friend and mentor. I thought he died in an accident in the filming of "Catch-22." But no, this shows footage of his death crash in the filming of the original "Flight of the Pheonix."
Paul Mantz and Frank Tallman were partners here based at Orange County Airport here in SoCal. I knew Tallman continued the movie aviation consulting after his partner's death and that he had only one leg. I was always led to believe that Tallman had lost his leg in an aviation stunt crash. But no, he unglamorusly injured his leg in a gocart accident, it got infected and had to be amputated.
Great post and I sure learned a lot today about one of my favorite subjects! You can read all about the partnership and Tallman's eventual demise in this wiki link:
Yup, it's not real as in a real full size airplane. You can fly a remote control airplane like that if you have the skill and the model is ready for it. This one was.
The long tail on Paul's plane is what caused the accident. He landed soft enough but the forces on it snapped if off easily and it had already been stressed. Stress is not your friend in the air.
