Weird problem....

So my early 99 SD PSD has been sitting for awhile because had a bad battery. So I replaced it today. Cleaned up connections on the old battery. Got in the truck and cranked on it for a little bit she fired up. Running kinda rough. So I let it idle for a little while. Then take it up the block and back about mile or so. Pull back in front of my house and park it. Idling real nice by now. But while it was idling rough the check engine light is on. And after I shut it off I try to restart it. Won't fire up at all. The CPS sensor is new. I just replaced low pressure oil pump. But I know if I wait for couple hours the truck will start again once it is cool. What is going on? Can anyone tell me? Also when I try and pull the CE code it says there is none.

A. You should always replace both batteries.

B. Does it crank or nothing at all?

C. What did you use to pull the code? Powerstrokes are very specific and you have to have a compatible code reader for a PSD.

I have chip for it that pulls the code. I know I should replace both batteries But Autozone would not warranty both of them since one was still good couple years ago so I got one new one then. And replaced the other today with a red top. It cranks fine just won't fire. Once the truck is running right I will replace the other.

Disconnecting the batteries can cause an SES like usually shows a 603 code i think. Did you disconnect both batts to replace the one?

Yeah but it was doing this before I replaced the battery. It just started again after I let it sit for awhile. It has nothing to do with the batteries just forget I even mentioned them. It fired right off again. I will try taking for a spin again tomorrow and see what happens. What sensor makes it hard to start when it bad or going bad?

GPR would do that. Glow Plug Relay. Insufficient power to the glow plugs would make for a hard start issue.

You can try to short out the two large posts on the GPR to find out if its really bad or not. I used a screwdriver when mine when out, do it for about 20 seconds and see if that helps.
