high idle
Being new to this advanced world of diesel tech, what is high idle, why should the mod be considered, and what is wet stacking?
As close as I can tell, the current idle setting is low enough to allow the internal temp to be insufficient to burn off the soot and therefore cause more wear and tear in the long.
What are the disadvantages to initiating this feature?
When should I use the high idle - only in the cold or heat?
only if idling for more than X minutes?
Thanks for the help
I don't know about wet stacking, but it probably is similar to stacking tuners. If it is, it's not a good idea. Get a proper tune built that will do everything you need in one package.
High Idle Mod
That came right out of the 6.0 forum tech folder. If you have an '05 - '07, look for the link specific to those years.
Wet stacking is when the fuel is insufficently burned, and the wet fuel washes the lubrication off of the cylinder walls, causing fuel escape into the oil at the minimum, and maybe worse things like cylinder scoring.
There are other reasons to avoid idling as well. Best to avoid idling to the extent possible, but if you must then do the high idle.
Here is a recent thread where we discussed idling:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...nd-idling.html
1-Does pulling and running very long periods at moderate rpm burn the gunk out like a gas engine? I recently pulled a heavy load from Mississippi to Montana and back and hoped the run would burn out the deposits.
2-Should i plan on an annual EGR cleaning and if so, what is involved?
Thanks
2. I don't intend to clean mine on any routine schedule. In fact, as long as it is under warranty, Ford will be replacing them as needed - not cleaning. I'm not convinced cleaning them is of much value. And often the valve itself has failed, and cleaning does not fix it.
Just my opinions, and I am FAR from an expert.
There are a lot of EGR threads here if you do a search for more info. Most would be down in the 6.0 diesel motor forum though.
