Vibration when decelerating from highway speed.

I have a 79 F-100 with a 300 I6 and 3spd std. When I hold a steady speed on the highway there is no vibration but when I slow down there is quite a noticeable one. I went underneath and pushed up and down on the front of the driveshaft. There is alot of play and its not the u joint. Is there just a bearing and seal in the back of the tranny that is hammered out or could it be something more? If its only a bearing how hard is it to replace?

Most have a cylindrical bushing that is pressed into the tailhousing. You can fix it without taking down the tailhousing if you don't mind the old bushing flopping around on the output shaft of the transmission. Just remove the old seal, push the old bushing out of the way with the new one. Replace seal.
I'd prefer to take it down and do it right, myself.

So theres not a bearing in there, just the bushing? What exactly is the procedure for replacing it if I take the tailhousing off? Would I need a press or just a hammer to put the new one in?
Thanx for answering.

Take another look at your u-joints, and make sure there's no load on the d'shaft (put the trans in N and set the park brake) when you check it.

If You live in the Rust Zone (like I do, here in Indiana), examine your driver side rear (upper) shock mount. It may have rusted thru. I went thru the same problem with my 1979 F-150. Also, might want to check the trans. lower, rubber mount (on the cross member).

Some good advice so far, but check engine and tranny mounts, slip yoke and tailshaft bushing, then u-joints.
