New Ranger

Yesterday I got rear-ended and I think my 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4 is totaled. I would like to hear some suggestions on what year used Ranger to replace it with. Please consider options that are available, reliability of 4wd, types of engines, etc. I like manuals but will probably pick get an automatic this time so that my fiance can drive it if needed. That is unless the automatic is not reliable. That's the kind of things I would like to hear. Thanks for your input.

How bad exactly is the damage?Because back in February I wrecked my 2000 Ranger, and I thought it was totaled, but somebody bought it and fixed it back up.So anything is possible. That's a nice Ranger you have and if it's possible,i'd try to fix it.

How bad is the damage? Well, lets see....the front bumper is mangled where it knocked me into a Jeep Cherokee, but it didn't seem to get into the grill or hood. The bed is trashed.....it's crumpled into the rear tires so I'm not really sure what damage there is to the frame or drivetrain if any. Both seats are broken from the impact. The center section of the dash that holds the radio and climate stuff is broken out from the rest of the dash. I don't know.....I'm not sure how much of the value the repair costs have to exceed to be considered totaled but I'm thinking it's gonna be really expensive. I loved the truck and would like to keep it but only if their insurance gives me enough to get it fixed.

Ok, as far as my initial question.....I will give my thoughts on things to consider as to which model year Ranger to replace mine with, if it goes that route.

I want the 4.0L V6 so which is better the OHV or SOHC version?
I will probably get the automatic but is it reliable as compared to the manual?
I've had no trouble with my PVH 4x4 stuff but am I smarter to go with the 2001 and newer design?

There are probably others too but that's what I'm thinking at the moment. Any comments?

It's hard to tell without pics, but if the bed is pushed up into the rear wheels, than i'm pretty certain you have frame damage.Which leads me to say find another truck.I will never trust a vehicle with Frame damage. As far as repair cost,if the cost of repair is more than the value of vehicle, than the insurance company totals it out.My damage estimate was set at 5,000 dollars. Here's what my truck looked like after the wreck....

From the sound of it, I'm just glad you survived. Thank God and good luck with your new ride.

Thanks, LMS. My fiance and I are just sore and stiff. I believe that my truck sacrificed itself for us like it was designed to do. It was a minivan that hit going about 35-45mph. She hit me, I hit a Jeep Cherokee and he hit another car. I think the only real injury was in the minivan where a little girl got an airbag in the face. She's ok though...she walked to the ambulance.

That's good to hear nobody was injured. And yep these trucks do sacrifice themselves to protect us.They sure do tend to fold up like paper though. In my wreck, the tree I hit pretty much ripped the front half of my truck off.I sure regret not having that transmission checked out before it locked up on me like that.

I would go with the 4.0 SOHC. Excellent motor with great torque.

I will never get an automatic again. From my research its not a question if an auto will fail, but when. And when they do they are expensive.

I've heard of as many problems with the manual as with the auto tranny.

The M5OD is a pretty decent manual tranny. 6 out of the 7 rangers I've owned have been manuals with no tranny issue's.. I would teach my fiance to drive a manual, or let her ride shotgun. Start giving in now and it will never stop he he. I would also avoids the PVH 4WD system like the pleaques of Eygpt. I would also opt for the 4.0 sohc. 03 was the first year that ford addressed the timming chain rattle due to weak tensionors. So, to get a 4x4 ranger with the 4.0 and no bugs, get an 03 and up. You'll get a good 4.0 sohc and the direct engagement system for the 4wd, and either tranny can be had. However, I would still look for a manual as I love to shift and I'm a manual sorta guy, also hard to beat for reliability. I think alot of problems people have with the automatic is poor maintence. Another plus for the manual as it doesn't require much maint, maybe a clutch every 150,000-200,000 miles, depending how hard you are on it.

................Whose insurance will pay for the damage ? Wait and see how much they will offer you for it , IF it is totaled . If so , offer too buy back your own truck , After you've rece'd several estimates for complete repair . Most wrecked vehicles that are totaled , are classified as such by ins. comp's because it is cheaper too total , than to fix ; not , because the damage is unrepairable . , rb

Mine went 180,000 miles before it locked up on me.When it did,it went big.But The new owner is still driving the truck without fixing the transmission.God help that brave soul.
