Hello folks,
I just bought a 1967 Mercury pickup with a straight six in it. It is not the original engine. I don't know how to tell if it's a 240 or a 300ci. What is the best way to tell? Here's a pic:
The vin will tell you the original engine.
Its a 300 or 240 you are correct.
Crank is the best way to tell. However the head casting number may give you a easier ID. Thats not guarenteed though. People through 240 heads on 300s to raise compression. You want to know................Pull the oil pan.
Crankshaft ID # would be great. If I remember correctly its on one of the throws and visable. If not-3.98 is a 300 crank throw. 3.50 is a 240. A tape mesure and a buddy twisting the engine by hand will do it. Oh, discontect the coil, these engines are notoriously good starters.
My 300 has a two groove pulley. One for the alternator, one for the PS. 300 two groove dampener for a 1976. Had to argue with the parts guy to get it. Didint want to look for a two groove.
