changing tailgates

I would like to know what tools I will need to change a tailgate on my 1988 f-250 and what other years are compatable for my year. Will a 1989 tailgate from a 150 fit on my 250

Tools... Lets see, I think that you can remove it with out any tools. You might have to take a couple bolts out where it hinges. But I really don't think so. It's been a while since I popped one off.

Yes the 89 Tailgate will fit fine. The difference in your year range truck between 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton is not in the body, it's in the drive train and power train as well as the suspension.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

A tailgate from any truck from this series(87-97/F150-F350) will fit though there are some minor styling changes between the early and late versions.

The tailgate comes right off without tools. The two cables snap off the truck bed, and then holding the open gate, you pull one side away from the truck. I think this is the passenger side. Then slide it a couple of inches to the passenger side, and the drivers side comes off. Lots easier with a helper, but doable by yourself.
Good Luck Frank
