bad door hing

I have a 1991 F-250. The drivers door lower hinge has play in it. LMC sells just the replacement pin. Does anyone know if that's all it normally takes to fix the hinge? I hate having to slam the door to close it.

any auto parts store has them.

you have to dremel the old one out.

usually both pins need replacement.

it is actually the bushings that wear out.

you need to support the door even when doing one.

30-40 minutes first one 15 minutes second one.

do an advanced search in this forum for more tips.

When you remove the hinges, make sure that you don't loose the backing plate inside the door frame. It's suppose to be held in by a few metal tabs but when I did mine the plate fell down to an impossible spot. I had to remove half the dash to fish it out. In retrospect after removing the two door hinge bolts I should have taken out two of the three hinge to frame bolts, pivoted the hinge and replaced one of the bolts to hold the backing plate while the hinge was removed. Would have saved me two hours and alot of hand scrapes!

Thanks for that tip Jemini. Did you buy a new hinge or were you just working on the door? Or are you saying I'll need to take the whole hinge off to replace the pin?

I can be a little thick sometimes. That's what I thought you were saying, and what I wanted to do. I just wanted to be sure. I'd hate to replace the pin and it still be loose. I called Napa they have one for $8 and change. I'm on my way to get it now. I get to use my die grinder again. I've had one for about a year and a half. I don't know how I got along without it for so long. Thanks for the info.

cut the center out of the pin, then you pry and hammer the old one out.

you will see how the new pieces have good bushings and the old one has worn out bushings.

here is a how to do it link on a lincoln site:

I was replacing the nylon roller bushing and not the hinge pin. There was not enough room to fully drive out the bushing pin without removing the hinge. Obviously the hinge pin replacement can be accomplished without full hinge removal - a much better solution!

Well I tried to do the pin today. Luckily before I took the old one out I noticed the new one they sold me is a good bit bigger. The one that's in the truck is maybe 1/4" dia. the new one is about 3/8". O well I'll go back tomorrow and hope they have the right one..

I've used the pin & bushing kit from NAPA and they work well. Pins seem to be a little longer than they need to be. Just keep an eye on them occasionally the pins will back up out of the bushings a little and I have to tap them back down. Other than that they work fine.
