How to identify motor?

Okay, I've got a 4x4 78 F150 with the T18 tranny and I don't know how to find out if I have the 351 Clevland or the 351 Modified. Also I want to swap in a ZF 5spd so which year model truck should I be looking at for the donor truck? I would like some body parts off it as well so it has to be the newer style (i think it started in 92). Thanks for any info!

I don't think they ever put 351 Clevelands in trucks, only 351W and 351M.

I believe you can tell by the top radiator hose connection to the block, the Clev is not raised up like the M series. Anyone else know if this is correct?

The only way your truck has a 351 Cleveland is if someone transplanted one in. I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility...mainly because my older cousin had a '74 that he put a 1970 351 C into (and then summarily blew it up). Here's the kicker...

He gave it to me when I was 15.

Both the motor and the trans were in the bed, so it was complete.

Not a speck of rust on it.

Nice set of aluminum rims, complete with center caps.

Long bed like mine, Wimbledon white (or equivalent) like mine.

My uncle needed the space out at his shop, so he told me to move it, fix it, or sell it.

I sold it to a scrap metal man for $50!

I know where his shop is...the last time I was at my mom's house I swear I saw my old truck still sitting in the same lot. I'm gonna ask him about it next time I visit.

Sorry to digress from the title topic...that just brought back some painful memories.

Its 99% likely its a factory M motor, the fastest way to tell is they'll be a raised cast rib about 1" tall off the driver's side of the distributor going from the intake to the water pump or look at the bellhousing M's used the big block pattern top bolts 7 3/4" apart, C's are 5" apart i think. But i don't know any good way to tell a 351M from a 400 without looking at the crank.

351C/351M/400's do not have a timing cover, just a flat plate.

The fuel pump bolts to drivers side of the engine block.

The bolts are at 12 and 6 o'clock, the only V8 to have this pattern.

351C/351M and 400's look identical. All three have 8 valve cover bolts per side.

351C: 1970/74 Passenger Cars/Ranchero's only.

351M/400: 1977/79 F100/350's / 1978/82 Bronco's / 1980/82 F150/350's // 351M: 1975/79 Passenger Cars / 400: 1971/79 Passenger Cars.

The engine code is the 4th digit of the VIN. 1977/82: H = 351M 2V // S = 400 2V.

There were NO 351W's factory installed in F Series trucks until 1981.

So if I've got the M then I want a tranny out of a 460 equipped truck?

Yes a 460 trans will work as well but it is going to be from a 2wd truck so the tailshafts will need to be swapped.
