I have a 96 F150 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive pu. 300 straight with 5 speed manual trans. Axle code is 18 on the door jam. The dif cover is 10 bolt with the pattern being--- 3 across the bottom, in a smile pattern. 3 across the top in a frown pattern. 2 on each side. Measured it as best I could, between say, 10 1/2-11 inches wide. I am going to have a powertrax noslip put in but have been reading horror stories about the noslip. Wanted to be sure I ordered the right one the first time. Is it 30 or 31 spline? One web site said 30 spline. Is 18 the code for LSD or open? Is it 3/4 or 7/8 inch shaft? I guess its a Ford 8.8 or is it a Dana? And lastly, why in the hell am I having such a hard time figuring this out? This is my first Ford, always had the ones that begin with a C. Thanks guys
What are you going to be doing with the truck? You can get a factory LS unit for cheap and install it. The factory unit is good, I got one off of ebay for $50 bucks! You can get a rebuild kit for $75 bucks to make it like brand new. Make sure it is 31 spline as there are a lot of mustang 28 spline LS's on ebay. It's very easy to do the swap, I will be writing an article on how to do it shortly.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Dec-02 AT 01:59 PM (EST)]oh im confused now. i got axle code 18 on my door. and the tag on the differential says 3.31. my ford dealer tells me that 3.31 was never put in f150s around the 95 model year, even tho they don't ever know that much. somebody save me
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Dec-02 AT 03:23 PM (EST)]Did you buy the truck new? Has the rear end ever been rebuilt? Was it swapped in from another vehicle? Have you ever tried to measure the ratio by rolling the tires and watching the driveshaft? With a penlight, you might be able to read the gearset codes off the edge of the ring gear by looking thru the diff fill plug hole. It will either have the ratio or the 2 numbers of teeth on the 2 gears stamped into the edge of the ring gear near the "Ford" oval. According to http://www.drivetrain.com , your ring gear is PN F3UZ4209A and the numbers of teeth are 43R & 13P to make a 3.31 ratio.
