Transmission Problem

I was driving my 1998 E.B. Expedition on the highway. My overdrive off light started blinking. A few min later the speedomoter suddenly quit. A few min later the trucked seemed to go into nuetral(it was still in drive). It did go into 2 so i was able to get it off the highway. I shut it off and started it back up. All the 4x4 related lights blinked and it was ok when i put it in drive. On the side streets on the way home it seemed to hit neutral between 2nd and 3rd gear. I drove it the rest of the way home in 2. Of coarse this morning is it driving fine. Also, that morning before my battery was dead(because my heat stays on without the key for some reason....???) and i had to jump it. I think(or hope) its sensor related.PLEASE HELP!

Transmission Problem

Sir,

I read your post and can honestly say "Thank god I drive a 1970 model". These newer trucks have made the "shade tree" mechanic a thing of the past. I would not know where to begin. I suspect you will have to take it somewhere so a diagnostic can be ran. I think the truck stores fault codes in memory. Trouble with this is it costs boo-koo bucks to own/operate the fancy test equipment and the cost is passed to you.

Good luck
Lee

Transmission Problem

If it ended with the first two sentences. There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) located on the back side of the transmission that feeds the speedometer and provides information to the computer to change shift points. When these fail, the transmission goes into a fault mode which is a little quirky but driveable. Late shift in first, but not going into neutral sounds strange. Apperances can be decieving sometimes. I'd start by unplugging the electrical connector and plugging it back in. If problem comes back, replace the sensor which is about $35. You can't get someone to look at it for that. Still something tells me you have an electrical problem with the power to the computer that controls the transmission. Concentrate on the other problem, not the transmission. I don't think your dead battery was a dead battery at all, but a bad electrical connection.
