Rubbing noise from rear...what is it?

I have a 2003 7.3 super duty with 60k miles that I haven't had any trouble with until now.

When I turn the wheel (one direction or the other) and accelerate I hear/feel a rubbing noise coming from the rear end. It doesn't do it when you accelerate from a stop without turning. I don't think I have ever noticed it until I accelerate.

It's been to rainy lately to climb under and check anything out but looking for ideas.

Any ideas on what to check first???

Thanks

If you think it is coming from the rear end, I would do this and get a closer look at the gears, ect. click here.

could it be the fluid in the diff? Maybe his limited grip is gripping better?

I had this problem and it sounds like that dreaded Carrier bearing. I heard it more when turning and going in circles. I had somebody drive in circles while I stood outside and listened..

If it's when you're turning, it could be your LS rear end chattering...

Good diagnoisis but it wasn't my rear diff. Thought it was tranny making noises and before FTE, I took it to another local shop up the road where they found the carrier bearing bad..

Check for rear axle leak... It leaks onto your e-brake shoes which can swell and will rub while driving... If it is limited slip you may need to check the level of your diff fluid. Friction discs will grab if low on fluid. Good luck.

Update...

I just wanted to post an update for anyone that finds this post and wondered with the resolution was.

I pulled the cover and did a close inspection. Everything appear to be just normal wear. I replaced the cover, fluid and was sure to add an additive before I finished up. After hitting the road again I noticed that the notice was the same as before.

I drove a few days to be sure everything was mixed well. At that point I added a bit more additive and after driving for a few days the noise is completely gone.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
