Same old speedo question, with a twist!

Hi all,
This question has been asked before, by many, including myself.
I have an 03 SD which has an inop speedo (auto door lock function inop as well). I've done the basics, like chasing down wiring, checking connectors, including replacing the VSS, which did nothing. So I pretty much moved on to other issues more important to me. But this has always bugged me...
There is one twist to this that perhaps may bring in a new idea from some of you. I do notice, that sometimes, if I leave the truck out in the weather overnight, and it rains, or has been wet out, the next time I use the truck the speedo starts working again for a while. Thinking about this, I am wondering if perhaps this may be hinting at a grounding problem somewhere. Thinking is that when wet, I get a ground somewhere, causing things to work for a bit... Am I all wet with this thinking ? (pun intended). And if this may be right, I have no idea where to look for the bad ground within that circuit.. Any ideas from anyone that may be able to help me finally kill this problem would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Rich

Nope...sounds to me like you're on to something.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a ground lead in the engine compartment that guys have talked about checking...sounds like it's happened to more than one or two guys.

I'm not a mech so let's wait till the experts jump on here this PM and let them advise you!

Joe

Rich, You maybe onto something but very well could be pure coincidence. If it seems to be consistant each time it rains then i might begin to blame the weather and possibly a bad ground. It could also be the humidity but if the ground only becomes tempermental during bad weather and no eratic behavior occurs while driving i think it maybe purely coincedental but weirder things have happened. It wouldn't hurt to investigate under hood/dash and check as many grounding points and wires for signs of a problem. Under hood grounds although they may initially look ok may infact not be. Look for any signs of corrosion or even discoloring on the grounding points. Wiring that undergoes vibration or exposed to heat are typically more subjected to problems. Recheck the items you have already inspected especially connectors. Many times the pins within the connectors can be slightly corroded or even tarnishing can be subject for concern.

Short of having a dealers proffesional mechanic with the correct information and know how look at it, you are subject to finding the problem yourself. Always look at the most obvious areas first.
Good luck
