Power steering

I finally figured out my 77 f250 has the upgraded 78 and later power steering pump on it. After a ton of searching, I found a pressure hose to replace the original leaking one. I replaced it yesterday and today I ran it and the pump whines now. Do I need to bleed the system? The fluid level is good. Thanks guys.

welcome to the wonderful world of the Ford power steering pump. it doesnt matter what year, it whines! its possible it needs to be bled, this does help. to bleed it, just turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times untill there are no hard spots. if there are no hard spots anyway, or after you do this, add some Lucas power steering stop leak. it gets rid of the whining, or at least reduces it. worked wonders on my 76 after i put a new pump on it.

Thanks 460/5, I'll give it a try tonight. The wierd thing is that it didn't whine before I changed the hose now it's pretty loud. Thats why I figured it was cavitating because of air in the system.

no problem. yeah, i had to put a new pump in mine three years ago now. you just have to work it around untill it doesnt whine or have any hard spots. add some lucas, and it'll be quieter than a sleeping baby. ok, maybe not that quiet, but you get the idea.
