Cracked 4.2 coil pack.
Check your coil pack that sits on your RH rocker cover-I notced a drop in fuel mileage and a slight miss under heavy load. It idled fine, but noticed in the mornings, it had gotten progressivly worse. Did the normal tune-up stuff like plugs, wires, filters ect... but when I power washed the engine after winter, it really ran bad. I ran all diagnostics and found no codes. Finally isolated each cylinder and found #1 completely dead, and 2 more with intermittant misfire. pulled the pack and found 3 huge cracks in the epoxy that seals the bottom, and had a rust-like substance leaking out. Got a new coil pack and now my mileage is 19 with gas and 17 on E-85. This is much better than the 17 on gas and 15 on E-85 I've been getting for about 6 months. I have about 90,000 miles on the truck, and after checking a few other 4.2's, we have found some with at least minor cracks and another one with similar mileage as mine with bad cracks.
