Hey guys I need some help please. I have a 78 F-150 Ranger 1/2 ton 4x4. My C6 transmission messed up on me the other day. Its bolted to a 302. For the past couple of weeks I have been planning on taking a 390 out of a 65 Ford Galaxie that I bought and putting it in the truck. Now that the tranny is messed up Im wondering if I can take the tranny out of the galaxie as well and put in the truck. The tranny is a Cruise O Matic. I know the tranny will bolt the the 390 cause it is right now, but will that Cruise o Matic tranny bolt up in my truck? And also does anybody know will i run into any problems as far as bolting up to the transfer case so i can still have 4 wheel drive and will there be any problems with the drive shaft being to long or to short. Any help in this would be helpful before i get it in the truck and realize its not going to work. Thanks!
Well, there are a lot of people on here who know much more than I do...but if you don't get a knowledgeable reply, start measuring. That's how I do most of my mods.
I think, however, that for me the number of variables involved here are simply too many. You didn't even mention the number of splines on the output shaft(s), the length of the output shaft(s), or adapting the cooling line length/location, etc...
I would go out to a junkyard and buy a shot C6 from a 360 or 390 truck for scrap value, then use it as a core deposit for a rebuilt one. Then all of your variables would be eliminated...not to mention that you don't even know HOW GOOD that Cruise-O-Matic still is.
I'm partial to the C6 because it is heavy duty and parts are still readily available and pretty cheap. Plus, there are a plethora of places on the net that make rebuild kits and performance packages for these things.
I orginally had a 360 with a C6 in my 75 4x4 and wanted to put a 460 in it. I took a c6 from a 77 Ltd from behind a 400. I had to swap the center shaft from the 4x4 c6 to the 2wd one. The 4x4 one was shorter and the transfer case has to bolt up where the 2wd tail shaft was. It worked good though. Not sure if a cruise-o-matic is compatible with the c6. Other than that if you have the time and the tools I would do it. Mine has the full time 203 tc.
