Considering new truck...
As some of you know I sold my 2002 F-250 Triton 5.4L to buy a home. I've since moved and gotten settled in. I am currently paying off some debt and the wife's 2002 Sport Trac. I am considering purchasing another F-250 late this year.
I want a diesel. I am thinking the 6.0L. Does the 6.0 or the 7.3 get better mileage? What are you guys getting in that dept? My gasser got 12 tops. If the diesel won't do any better I am not going to purchase it. I've told the wife they do a lot better and I don't want to be stuck whining about the mileage once I get it.
Is there any years better than another?
I was thinking about the 6-speed because I like the granny low, but the wife can't drive one. Is the Torqshift holding up well? Is there anything I should know about those?
I am thinking I will get something 2005 or 2006 range. I don't want another interior like mine, i need a change.

I can't comment much on the diesel other than currently it's more price per gallon than gas.
The 6 speed is a good choice and should reduce your overall costs and improve reliability and is even better if it keeps the wifey out of driving it and if you can even find them on the lot. Their most likely not easy to find.
The 5.4L 3V with the 6-speed should give you better mileage than your 02. I get about 16 mpg on the highway with about 14 around town. That of course is unloaded and not playing. I haven't had one issue or complaint with my 6-speed at 60k. (knock on wood).

I can't tell you much about the 7.3. I know my '05 6.0 has gotten a best tank of 21.7 MPG. That was a one time shot on 55 MPH roads and probably won't ever do it again. It averages around 15 or so in mixed driving and a good all interstate average would be around 19. It is going to depend on a lot of things though and it will vary. If you're going to look toward an '05-'06 model, it'll be the 6.0. The Torqshift is a great transmission and you will be pleased with it if you buy one.
