Express bed wheel offset

Does anyone know why the rear wheels are not on the opening center for the 8' express bed. I have talked to people with these trucks and they have the same situation.

It was a design error on the part of the die maker - all the die's were already made and shipped to the factories by the time it was discovered.
An engineering mamagement team reviewed the situation and determined that there wasen't any real harm in the way the part would function and the cost of remaking the dies was not worth the change.

hades when i had cut the express bed down for the 55 1/2 ton { and i dont wanna hear no crap as i offered to trade anyone anywhere for a regular bed straight across for one in comparable shape before i did it ! } i was just gonna cut them out and mini tub it back to even with the frame rail . it woulda gave me room for 14 inches of rubber per side ! without widening the fenders ! i was gonna do the same thing when it was on the one ton as i have a tendency to work a truck and figured the duals would eventually meet the bed .....
