New Ranger, Help Please!
4x4 doesnt work. i can press the 4x4 button all day long and the light wont even come on. my buddy told me it might be the auto hubs but i think if those were bad the lights would at least come on.
the tranny. the stick is harder then most to get into gear but i noticed that someone cut the part of the lever with the bolt in it and then welded a piece of threaded rod in place. i need a new shifter im sure.
the transmission makes a decently loud humming/whirring noise in all gears. i did notice the inside shift boot is ripped in half and the outer boot wont stay in place but if held down its quieter. is this a problem i need to be worried about? and the trans is full of fluid.
also there is a clang clang clang noise when the clutch is pressed to the floor. its more noticable after driving for a little ways.
and and all help is appreciated guys, and thanks in advanced.

[COLOR="Red"]ITs not your hubs, not yet any way, first thing first.Get the Tranfer case to roll over to 4wd first. It could be any of these things.
There is a relay up front under the hood, in the pwer sorce panel
The Motor its self, they are known to go out, DIE and sometimes they just get tired.and cant turn the lever no more. There is a electric motor that is on the back of the Transfer case.Look for the wires you will find it. easy to spot.this motor is what turn the Tranfer case to in 4wd.
There is a "computer" for the 4wd system. IF I rember right in my 93 reg cab I use to have, the computer is on the little ledge behind the seat under the carpet. And in the xtra cabs its behind one of the back jump seats.
When you push the button, do you hear a click at all from the computer?
The push button switch its self can go out also, but not to often.
with out just throwing parts at it, and then finding out its in the wiring, you will need a mutli meter and do a little testing.

[COLOR="Red"]Your tranny could have been replaced, at one time, with one out of a newer truck.Nothing wrong with that, but you may need the correct shifter, to go on the shifter tower.
IT could be hard to get in to gear for a number of reasons, the rigged up shifter?, the slave and or the throw out bearing going out.Air still in the line from soemone doing the slave system at one time. maybe try bleeding the clutch
pilot bearing going out. wrong master cylinder for the truck. They changed a few tiems threw the years.
Flywheel warped, syncros in the tranny worn out.
possilbe the fire wall has a crack where the clutch master cylinder is attached to the fire wall.or the fire wall is flexing real bad.

[COLOR="Red"]What dose the fluid look like?, what kind of fluid is it. ITs suppose to be one of the mercon ATF fluids
is it louder in one gear or the other?...how loud is it.....it shoudl pbe pretty quiet if all is good. But dont let a little noise alarm you to much. but alot...
It could last anouther 100,000 or it could go out at any time if there is more noise than should be.
your tranny should be a M50D R-1 atleat that what the facorty would have put.

just when the clutch is pushed in?....that could be in slave and throw out bearing unit, a pilot bearing,or a warped flywheel, or a clutch disc that has warped or broke a spring....
start small, and bleed the clutch first and Change out the tranny fluid.this will give you a chance to look at the plug also, to see if you got any chunkies.
