Rear End options.. what is inter changable?

i am looking for a new rear end for my 1998 Expedition, i was wondering what is all inter changable.

like out of which years, what other trucks (ie. will a f150's rear end fit? )

If Im not mistaken, your rig has the smaller 8.8 rear end. If possible, I would switch to the larger 9 3/4 rear end. It is strong.

Just some quick googling of 9 3/4 rear end turned up

Ford 9 3/4 Differential Replacements for 8.8 - Drivetrain.com

Along with a few other links. Google is your friend, don't forget about it. It seems you would have a 8.8 Rear end as the expy is almost an F150, which has it. I am going to go with(if this link was correct at what you were looking for) that it is not bolt on and will take a good amount of time, a fair amount of tools and knowledge, and a couple extra sets of hands to put on.

No an F-150 rearend won't work without welding. The F-150's have leaf spring rear suspension, while Expi's have Coil Spring or Airbag suspension.

Most Salvage yards have an interchange manual/database. They can usually tell you what to look for. I'm not 100%, but any rear end from a 1997-2002 Expi with the same drive configuration as yours (2WD or 4x4) should bolt in. Also look at the rearends from 1998-2002 Lincoln Navigators. But some Expi's have rear drums and some have rear disc brakes. One with disc brakes likely has a different master cylinder than one with drums. A 9.75" rearend with disc brakes may not accept the backing plates from an 8.8" with drums. The pinion U joint may be different. Also if you find one with a different gear ratio your speedometer will be off. If you have a 4x4, and you change the rear end ratio, you'll need to change the gear ratio of your front differential. This is all stuff you'll need to research before you purchase.
