2.) Only changed a clutch in my ranger, do you have to drop the trannie in these old trucks to get to it, and is it considered a "hard" job for a beginner?
1. Clutch chattering, slipping, soft pedal- pressure plate springs weakened from heat.
2. no it is not too hard for a beginner, remove driveshaft, remove linkage from trans, carefully remove trans-{heavy},remove clutch rod by backing off of adjustment, unbolt bellhousing, unbolt pressure plate, clutch will come out at the same time.i highly recomend resurfacing fly wheel which will have to be removed also.replace throwout bearing, clutch plate, pressure plate.use a pilot tool to install clutch and press plate, it is a tool that simulates the shaft on trans used to center everything with the center of the flywheel so when you restab the trans it will go in a lot easier.also check the pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel where the trans shaft rides,i am sure i left something out and someone will point this out. get a manual and follow instructions. good luck
Then let me ask you this, she is hard to get into 1st/granny and reverse also. The transfer case goes in easy, but coming out of 4x4, she is kinda tough to shift. What do you think the problem is? The trans seems noisy in both granny and reverse. Also she occasionally jumps out of 3rd while under load, like going up a hill. Any ideas?? Run her until she needs a rebuild? Leaks are very little. How can you tell what trannie is which?? It says Borg-warner but I can't readany numbers. Thanks for any help. Blair
