I have a 1999 EB expy with a 5.4L in it. The other day i was driving home and gave it a lot of gas when i got on the highway to avoid oncoming traffic. When i was crusing around 65MPH i noticed a slight knocking in the engine and there was no loss of power. When i got home i did not hear the knocking. Today when i changed my oil i notice that there seemed to be a little discoloration in my oil (kinda of sorta brownish) and when i wipe the oil filter holder there was some very fine metal chip on the rag that i wiped from the filter. After i finished and started it back up i heard the knocking from the engine again but this time it only knocked around 2500RPM and did not knock when it is idling. The knock seems like it is coming form dead center in the engine. Any help of any info or suggestions would be greatly apprieated.
How loud is the knocking you are hearing? Its hard to diagnose any noises over the internet, especially the motor since there are so many intricate parts in there. I could guess, but it wouldn't be anywhere near scientific. How many miles on your 5.4? More importantly, how has it been maintained through the years? (Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to pass judgment by that question)
Hello 97expguy:
its been babied for the six years that i have had it, and it has 150000 on the speedo. Everytime something has happened to my expy i have fixed it myself so i am pretty mechanically inclined.
Thank you
P.S. anything you ask will not be taking personally i would just like to get this fixed so please ask away. Thank you

I hate to say it, but from the symptoms you've described, it sounds like a spun rod bearing.
