hey guys, Need some help.
Truck is up on jack stands as I type.
1) I'm trying to replace my right outer ujoint. I have the type of tool that inserts into an air chisle which is to allow you to remove the joints with the shaft still on the truck, problem is that its not doing much, I've soaked the joint with penitrating oil with zero results.
Any other advice for removing the joints when still on the truck?
if not
2) In order to pull the shaft from the truck do I need to get inside the front diff. to remove any retaining clips or will the shaft slide out once I'm able to get the splidle removed?
3) On the spindle, how the hell does this part come out? I've removed the bolts that hold this one but she's also tight an have to pry/beat on it if I've missed something.
The side axles slide out, there is a slip joint on the passenger side with a rubber boot over it. To remove the side axle the whole hub assembly has to be removed, remove the hub guts, remove the bearing retainer nuts, remove the hub and rotor assembly, remove the inner hub bearing plate(this will be stuck in the spindle and will have to be worked out after removing all the bolts), then finally the side axle can be pulled.
To remove the U-joint from the axle, first remove the clips from all 4 bearing caps, then press one cap in to push the opposite cap out, and then reverse to remove the other cap. Repeat for the second half of the joint.
The text book way is to use a spindle puller, which I think you can hire.
Another way is to get a good piece of wood and pound on the side of the spindle near the end, down, up ,left and right until it starts to shift.
Yet another way is to drive a big chisle in between the spindle and the knuckle. That will always work but may cause some damage to the spindle flange that will have to be dressed with a file before refitting.
Hope this helps.
I used the chisel method last time I had mine apart, it took a lot of pounding working one side a little than the other, didn't do any damage that couldn't be fixed in seconds with a grinder. The brake shield was a little worse for wear after all this so consider installing new ones if they are rusting out.
