OEM paint question

Restorer Buffs,

From the factory, was the grill side of the radiator support panel (much of which is visible through the grill openings) painted body color or painted black?

It seems most folks have body color behind the grill - but I think that if it was painted black (or maybe a black undercoating applied?), it would make the grill pattern stand out better....

Original is black, and always a peeve of mine when I see a nicely restored or even modified truck with it painted body color. It shows through the grille and really distracts the eye.

I agree with Dwight. Factory is black, and they always look weird to me when they are not.

Hey guys--what about the firewall and the inner fenders? Were they usually the body color, or black? I've seen pictures of both.

usually the firewall is body color...but my replacement cab has full undercoating on the firewall...from the factory...the ONLY one Ive seen that way in all my years in dealing with these trucks. The inner fender aprons, battery tray, core support, lower front fender braces, headlight buckets, the steering column lower brackets(the clamp at the base and the curved plate which clamps to the column and the cowl access panels(3) are ALL painted black...about a 70% gloss I recall reading someplace...
The core supports painted body color haphazzardly is a pet peeve of mine...and a good way to spot a truck thats been repainted. Peeps too lazy to put paper behind the grille and headlights.
The hood hinges and fender apron to fender bolts are all left natural finish originally.
