This is only my second post, so I'm pretty new. I just bought a 2002 F350 SRW V10 4x4. Mine has the auto/manaul locking hubs, which I have never had before. I had an old F150 with manual warns, so I'm not sure some of the sounds I'm hearing are normal.
Yesterday, I was backing a trailer and needed my 4x4. My rear two wheels were in the mud, my front two were on dry pavement. When I enganged my 4x4, I had to turn my front wheels on the dry pavement and it made a very large "pop" sound and it felt like the wheel skipped across the pavement. I have noticed my front wheels in 4x4 seem to be very "grabby" when enganged, especially when turning.
Is this normal? I had read in my manual I can run my hubs locked (manually turned) even on dry pavement, but they make the same popping sounds, even when the transfer case is not enganged.
There is a good post a little further down the page on here about how the auto hubs work that should be able to explain everything to you. If the hubs are making the popping sound in both manual and auto I would inspect them and grease em up and see if it still happens. It sounds to me like its the hubs engauging though. You will notice the front tires to have a lot more grab when 4x4 is engauged and if you crank the wheel hard the front end will try to walk over that way due to the tires trying to pull the truck that way. Thats the best way I can discribe it. i hope it helps you out.
