I am in the process of installing a new C6 in my formerly 3 speed truck. The trans is totally dry of fluid and I need to know if prior to installation, the Torque Convertor needs to be individually filled with tranny fluid.
Or can this be accomplished by just filling the tranny conventionally?
With an empty convertor, how many quarts of ATF will my C6 need?
Pour one quart of ATF into the converter BEFORE installing. Once the tranny is in the truck pour 4 quarts of ATF into the tranny dipstick tube. Start your truck and shift between reverse and forward gears. Then add 1-2 quarts at a time (shift between gears as you add) untill full. Your C-6 and converter will take somewhere around 12-13 quarts to fill.:-X12 Deen
Yeah, I would fill the TC if it could be easily accessed.
If the TC is off the engine, fill it almost half full, not full otherwise it will spill out when you tip it to install on the tranny input shaft.
If it is in the truck you should be able to get access to the TC drain plug(if it has one) through the splash shield on the front bottom of the bell housing.
Most people I talk with don't like to run the TC dry while filling the pan and running the engine. I would guess there is not enough harm to notice, but psychologically it bothers me. So like I said try to fill the TC and then fill the pan with several quarts and run the engine and add more fluid as it goes.
Depending on the tranny, you will use a lot of fluid. well over 10 quarts in most cases.
