I have a 94 E150, 5.8 engine, with 103,000 miles. I get a lot of transmission shudder, especially on hilly terrain. What causes this and what should I do about it. Thanks
I would guess your torque converter clutch is starting to go away. Torque shudder is a common symptom of this problem. If you have an E4OD, torque shudder is probably the TC.
At 103K miles you need service at least and possibly a rebuild.
Ijust changed the ATF in my 95 F150 with E4OD tranny. It had 126,000 mi on the original ATF. I had rough shifting and shudder. Now all is quiet again. Apparently the ATF was worn out. The shudder appeared about 75,000 mi. and continued until I changed the ATF. I suggest changing the ATF before looking at any adjustments.

changing the fluid might work. In any case dropping the pan will tell you alot about the condition of the tranny. Color of the fluid, particles, sludge, metal fuzz on the magnet, all tell a story.
Keep in mind with torque shudder, it can be an intermittent problem so changing the fluid might not guarantee a fix, but at least you will get rid of most of the particles that might block some valves.
When my truck did this, the problem would go away for fairly long periods of time, but gradually the periods of shudder became more frequent.
Doesn't hurt to change the fluid though. You might get lucky,
2 Ford eod and 2 with shudders. The 98 V10 just developed a 4th gear shudder and the 94 Mk8 has one with accel. in 2-3rd gears. Apparant;y, there's a piston that's easy to change in the Lincoln's with just dropping the pan that fixes most of them. That and totally drain the fluid and use Redline synthetic.
