I have a 1984 F150 4.9 liter 300/6 with a C5 automatic transmission.
When it shifts from 2 to 3 the up shift is very sloppy the engine rpm’s creep up and then it thumps into third gear. If I am gentile with it is less severe. I have been working on this problem for some time. It’s really not a performance issue it’s just an inconvenience. The transmission has 195,000 miles on it and has never been in the shop. I have changed the transmission fluid religiously every 30,000 miles.
To try and correct this problem I have
* Adjusted the bands, no improvement.
* Replaced all vacuum hoses from the vacuum modulator valve to the manifold. No improvement.
* Replaced the vacuum modulator, no improvement.
* Adjusted the kick down linkage. No improvement.
When I kick the transmission down from 3rd to second it downshifts fine but then has the same problem shifting up again.
You could try one of the transgo basic type shift improver kits which can rectify some problems and improve the shifts. It sounds like you might have a 2-3 flare which is common on c4/c5's.The prob might be caused by wear in the direct clutch pack with that mileage on it..
The c5 also has a lockup torque converter they tended to have alot of problems .I wouldchange it out for a c4 converter. That is the only differnece between the two trannys
Good luck , Jon
3rd gear clutches are probably worn because of the lockup converter. The c-5 (only) has a wave plate to apply 3rd softly and prematurely burns up 3rd clutch but with this many miles this is not prematurely and also can't change C-5 converter to C-4 converter because bellhousing on C-5 is about 1 inch thicker than C-4 you can buy a C-5 converter with lockup feature taken out at local trans shop.
