im striping the cab of my 78 F100 got to the point of wanting to take the windshield out and realised i want to keep it so i have to actuall know how it comes out not just smash it out......the rubber seal seams to be in pretty good shape....do i have to destroy the seal to save the glass....is there a technique to takekeing these out gently?
Just took the windshield out of my 54 a few nights ago. I cut the weatherstripping which was still more difficult than I thought but I was able to get the glass out intact. I'm not sure if you can salvage both but I'm sure there may be someone on here that knows if it can be done. Good luck with your project.
Save the windshield and cut the seal, try to get one of those tools the glass places use, it has a 90 degree blade and a draw handle. I bought one for 20$, best tool to have for doing the job.
as far as the seal goes i havent seen one yet as for getting the glass out intact, 2 words piano wire; and a friend of course
Piano wire is not going to do anything to the 73-79 seal. There is no glue that was used on these gaskets when installed. It is very simple to remove the windshield and save the gasket, done it more times than I can count. Start at an inside corner, usually the driver side, and roll the gasket down while putting slight pressure on the glass. When the whole corner is rolled down it will get a lot easier the further you go. Search "windshield removal" and you'll find plenty of threads on it.

I"ve got one of those in my toolbox, never put it to use on a F-series windshield.
ranger429 thanks for the tip, I never had any luck on that task. Will follow your advise and give it a try on the next one.
No problem. I've reused every single gasket on every windshield I've pulled.
This is just the opposite here. I used telephone cable because I was out of weed whacker line but it worked just as good for installing. You can see how the gasket is very flexible and will roll in or out very easily. The hardest part removing these windshields is getting the first corner to release. Once that is done it is a piece of cake.
This is on the driver side pillar going up. It pulled the gasket in no problem. I also use a special hook tool I got from Matco to ease installation if I have to pull a little harder on the gasket.
i had a hard time takeing the rear out i ended up bending the frame and now i need new everything for the back window,,,,im trying to not make the same mistake with the fron...surprisingly i took the complete front end apart over 2 nites by myself ,,,,not 1 broken bolt or anything....this truck is in pretty sound shape so im really trying to take it apart as gently as possible.
If you bent the trim on the rear window you were pushing to hard before you got the gasket rolled down. Don't make the same mistake with the front windshield or it will bust. There is no give in them.
