96 351 to 7.3 diesel swap
#17
i've found this out since my last post. the allison route would be spendy. i think i'm just going to stick with my e4od since i have one in the truck now and a spare in the corner of my shop.

i agree the allison would be happier with the torque the cummins will put out but i have a spare tranny that i'm going to beef up in the mean time.

Have you considered a manual tranny?
If you need to pop for an adaptor plate to mate your E4OD anyhow..........
And you will need to shell out coin for a rebuilt auto tranny anyhow........
What about going to a 5spd or 6spd Ford manual with tcase?
I'm on the verge of doing a swap.
My 351 is tired in my F350.
I have headers, exhaust, some other stuff to freshen it up, but I tow my Jeep on a trailer, with camping gar and the family even a stockish Cummins could be a better solution for me.
I can't unload my truck now, and come up with enough cash to buy another good PSD Ford, so a swap is good in that repsect also.
For the sake of argument, many guys in my 4x4 club are telling me to swap to a 7.3.
I am leaning on a 12v swap for ease of install, I thought the 7.3 was heavily computer controlled and not as easy to swap?
What exactly makes the Cummins a better candidate for swap? (looking for talking points over beers really)
Thanks

The 12V is easier because of the wiring. Mechanical Pump versus Electrical is alot of wires. The cummins also is much more easily modified. The powerstroke is Hewie (Spelling) Injection, and pulses the fuel through the injectors, through the High-Pressure-Oil-System, which means more wires and sensors. 500HP on a cummins is alot less expensive than a powerstroke, turn up the pump, bigger delivery valves, injectors, intake, exhaust, and turbo, whereas the 7. would require atleast stage 3 hybrid injectors, a bigger High Pressure oil pump or dual pumps (1k+), a custom burnt chip from tony wildman or someone like that, and turbo work... Cummins is alot easier, and alot less money
