I was replacing plugs & wires & noticed these brittle hoses going to a coffee can looking thing that I'm sure is some air polution B.S. anyhow one of them was broke. By the time I was done they were all broke. How important are they. Can I just run it with them broke?

It's a vacuum reservoir and you kindof need it. Just get some rubber vacuum hose that slips over the broken ends tightly to splice them back together. This is a common problem on anything with the plastic vacuum lines. Around here it's the first thing the rats go after too.

you said you need it but what does it help with? I haven't had this thing on my truck for 10 years and haven't noticed any problems at all.

On my 1985 F150, that "coffee can" is a vacuum reservoir for accessories such as the cruise control, heater controls, etc. The idea is that if your engine is under a lot of load, for example climbing a hill, it will produce very little vacuum to run these accessories. The "coffee can" is there to store up vacuum to keep these accessories functional when this happens.

Look at it this way. Ford put it there for a reason. If they could have saved any $$ to leave the "coffee can" off of every vehicle, they would have.

If you leave these vacuum lines open(or any vacuum line for that matter), the motor will stumble on throttle tipin and possibly stall.

Examine that coffee can for leaks. Mine looked good; but the bottom was gone.
Get a good one from a salvage yard or one from FTE vendors. Some years have plastic reservoirs.

Yhea, not all years have the metal coffee can. Some have a plastic or rubber unit that looks like a ball mounted on the driver's side.
