Great forum!!!! I’m thinking about purchasing a f-350 for a second vehicle. I would like to have a diesel ford. I’m going to be purchasing a fifth wheel camper in the next year or so and I want to make sure I get a truck that is going to safely pull this load. I don’t mind driving a little slower J so the non turbo model may work for me. I just don’t have the means to spend 5-20k on a truck. I’ve lived on this forum for the past couple of days reading everything I can on these idi diesels (yea, I’m a total newb) Anyway, will the idi of a 1985 – 91 vintage handle a fifth wheel on the interstate pretty well? Anything in particular I should look for that is unique to these trucks when I start shopping? This will be my first diesel anything. So any help is much appreciated. Thank you, Jerem0621
a 250 would probably do for you unless you have a huge 5th wheel.and they will pull anything a newer truck will just not as fast without a little modification.for pulling,a turbo would be ideal.dont buy anything pre 87 unless you dont need a block heater.the pre 87 6.9 had issues with the heater cracking the block.get some sca test strips when looking at one to test the coolant as well.make sure you get one with ideal gearing for what you need im not to savvy with the gearing but someone else will help you out on that.make sure the batteries are good and atleast 850cca or better.see if the return lines are good and if possible check the glowplugs but the glow plugs and return line it are both cheap plugs $8 a piece and return line kit around $30-40.hope this helps
The one I'm looking at is a 26 ft, 1986 model. It's a little old but the people who own it have had it since new and it is in great shape. They pull it with a 1993 f-150. (yea they are asking it).
