Aod

Well, my truck has always had a minor trans fluid leak since I got it. It is an 86 with a 302 efi and aod trans. I have had it sitting in the garage recently while Im working on the rear tank. I have noticed that it is leaking more fluid than it used to, which doesn't really surprise me. It seams to leak some from the pan, but there is more coming from above it where it bolts up to the motor. What would you guys suggest to do? Should I try and get it fixed before it gets worse yet, or go until it goes? Also, what type of fluid is best to use for the trans? I know there is a kind that will mess it up, What kind is that also?
Thanks

Sounds like the front shaft seal may be leaking along with the pan gasket. Mercon is the recommended transmission fluid for 81 up Fords. Anything other than Mercon fluid is bad for your transmission. The front seal replaces like the tailshaft seal, which I recommend you change also.

Thanks for the info. Im pretty sure it has Mercon/Dexron III or something along those lines. Sometimes it seems like it shifts at weird times and sometimes kind of hard. But is that because it doesnt have all the electronic shifting? Would you just replace the seals or would you rebuild the trans?
Thanks

The odd and hard shifting might be due to the modulator valve. If it has been replaced before it might have an adjustment screw. Turn it counter clockwise to soften the shift. Pull the vacuum line off it to be sure there isnt any transmission fluid inside it. If there is, the diaphram is busted and it needs to be replaced. If you can afford the time and money to have it freshened up, it would be wise to do it now instead of waiting. You can save yourself some money by pulling the transmission and have it bench built. If you dont have a place to do it or the experiance, then you might want to have the shop do it.

An AOD does not have a modulator valve. Those are on the C6 and C4.
The shifting is controlled by the TV cable. At idle, the TV cable should have not tension on it, but it should not be loose either. The TV cable has a self adjuster at the throttle bracket mount. You release the lock on the cable and the spring will set the cable position, then press the lock in. This gets the cable to a base setting. That will set the TV cable so shifting should be about right. It should be correctly set using a gauge in the TV pressure port on the tranny. The pressure at idle should be 0-3 psi.

Ah crap. Yeah I forgot he has an AOD. But the TV cable wouldnt necessarily make it shift hard. That just controls the point when it shifts. I have never had one (AOD) shift hard unless it had way too much tension ( almost pulled all the way out), making it shift at 4 grand. If you have your transmission freshened up, the shop will take care of all the adjustments.

Thanks for the help guys. It shifts at the right rpm range but sometimes it seems like it is harder than other times. I will look into getting it freshened up a little bit.
