Hello.* I have a 98 expedition 5.4L rwd.* automatic transmission.* The battery recently died and I had to boost it.* Since then I have had electrical gremlin problems with this thing.* It would start sometimes, and then just appear dead others.* The theft light would blink, and then there would be this weird beeping from under the glove box area.* But it would always start eventually after a day or two then it would be fine for a like a month or two.* Then this time when it happened I changed that battery and connectors thinking that was the problem.* It fired up fine, ran well for a day or two.* Then recently I went to drive it, and the speedometer and odometer have stopped working.* All the other gages work, gas, batt etc.* And when you drive it feels like the transmission is stuck in some kind of limp mode.* I have done a search on the forums and other places and have noticed the GEM problem with water leaking in.* So I check behind the fuse box and it looks like the GEM has a plastic tray over it.* Like a little tv dinner.* It is covered in dust and I can't feel any water on it.* I was wondering if that plastic tray is stock or if that has been added by the previous owners?** Basically does it sound like I need to replace the GEM?* can I do it myself?* Or does ford need to program a new one?* And is there any other possible causes for the transmission problems.* I am really hopping they are all one thing.** Thank you.* Any help would be much appreciated.
I would inspect the battery cables a bit more. Since it ran fine for a few days after you changed the battery and connectors, I would suspect a problem with the other end of the cables not making good connection.
