Question Intermittent electrical problem

My son's '94 w/5.0 is having an intermittent electrical problem with lights. Some nights everthing works as it should. Other times, the tails lights and dashboard light do not light up, but the brake and headlights contiue to operate as they should. Where should I start to look first?

Main light switch first. They are notorious for over-heating and scorching contacts. ALL of the lighting circuits run through the main light switch at some point. Remove the switch completely to check for burnt or melted contacts. The connector on the switch is pretty hefty and can appear just fine until you disconnect it from the switch.

This is not to say that this is the only possibility, simply where I would start looking.

I agree with greystreak92, i have had several 92-7 ford trucks and atleast 4 of them have had the plug on the back of the headlight switch melt or the switch itself burn. On three of them i attributed it to the hi and low beams being run at the same time. Whether by holding the dimmer switch or that box that wires them that way. And also running aux. lights without running them through a relay, and off of the low beams will overload the switch too.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. If the main switch turns out to be the problem is that a Ford part only?

Darn. I can't COUNT the number of times I've just held that high-beam switch in the pulled out position while cruisin down the road! :-O
