Broken Shock Mount

Hi,

I have a 2001 F150 4X4 that is my daily driver. I changed my tires over the weekend and noticed one sway bar end link was sheared on one side. No problem to replace that. Then I looked for any other signs of damage. The shock mount ear on both lower control arms are broken. Surprised as it's seldom off the road - most likely pot hole damage - Ohio winters.

Temporary fix was to weld the ears back in place. I know butt welding isn't that strong and will likely break again.

Has any one experienced this problem. Solutions? Do replacement control arms have more reinforcement?

I could buy a new truck as it's got over 100k miles, but like the V6 stick and would hate to buy a non-ford to get what I want.

I don't know exactly how your shocks mount. but a stronger fix would be to get a peice of channel iron or even a peice of square tube and cut off one side the side with the seam in it. Drill holes for your shock bolt and one in the bottom 5/8s or better. then cut your old mount off and grind it smooth. then drill a hole in the control arm for the 5/8s or better bolt to go through and use some heavy washers and a lock nut to mount your new fabed up mount. you shuld round off the corners on the up right sides so there are no sharp points to catch anything. It's just a suggestion, that I would do if it were me.

You could weld the Queen Mary to the control arm but it wont fix th problem.
Figure out why the problem exists in the first place.
Perhaps the shock body is a little too long and the shock bottoms out before the suspension does????
Given the fact that the truck has many miles on it, one could assume that many theories could be true.
Determine why your current design has failed, and repair it with current methods.
