is the 400 a big block or a small blolck?

Ugghh...

This is a Chevy term. Fords don't have any tell-all characteristic to distinguish between the two, and it's a purely subjective designator to begin with. Fords use familes to designate engines.

That's all folks.

I have 2 books in front of me one is how to build a small block ford and how to build a big block ford and neither have any thing on the 400.

the 400 is in the 335 class those engines are tenetivley(excuse my spelling) called a "small" block engine,,although it was created to replace fords worn big blocks it is still a "small" block

small wide block

Yes there have been many of drunk arguments over that question. But in the end I would have to go with small block if I had to have a answer. The reason being you can interchage ford winsor style heads (260 289 302 351) on a 351m 351c or 400 with minor mods. Back in the day people would regrind 351c cranks and put them in 302's That was the first 347. The boss 302 had the cleavland 4v heads put on at the factory. besides the dizzy I dont know of any other big block parts that will interchange with the 335 series motors. So I guess you could call it a small wide block.
