This is in a 75 F-100 with a 360 and 3 speed auto, does someone know what
case this is and when driving in 2 wheel drive do I run with the hubs unlocked and the case in neutral?
That is a 203 pattern for sure. The locking front hubs would indicate that the thing has been converted to "part time". If this is the case, this pattern is no longer applicable, as this case will no longer have the "LOC" functions.
Have you confirmed that the pattern is actually like that? Your part time converted case should have a 2wd selection now, and this will disengage the front output, providing you with a real 2wd only output. This will allow you to drive with the front hubs in the free position.
Are you sure that the t-case has not been changed. Often times the **** is just something that was found and installed.
What pattern does this case have. How does the shift lever move?
If the truck has a non converted 203, this truck will not move if this combo is used.
If it has been converted, it no longer has just high range. It will have 2wd or 4wd, and an option of 4wd lo range. Thats it. This case can be run with two individual shifters, and one shifter will provide range selection in low and high and the other will provide 2wd and 4wd selection.
This provides the option of 2wd low range. Must have two shift levers to do this.
Stock shift levers for modified 203's will not permit 2wd low range.
I just pulled a NP203 out of my truck that had the 2wd conversion done to it. The 'HI' was 2wd high side. The 'HI LOCK' is high 4wd. 'N' is neutral (duh). 'LOW' is low 2wd. 'LOW LOCK' is low 4wd. Now this is the way mine was converted. It is out of a 1974 F100. The P.O. told me he bought the truck in 1979 and it was already converted.
The pattern seems to work as indicated, I have run in 4 wheel high and it acts like it is in 4 wheel. Today I will go and find a hill to see if there are two speeds in high and low. I believe there is,if so was this converted to part time? and if so do I still run in neutral with the hubs free? At this time I have been driving the truck with the t-case in neutral and the hubs unlocked, most of the time when I have had the hubs locked I have had it in 4 wheel high. I have had the truck for about two months.
I am not sure if all conversion kits are done the same way on the 203s, but mine to run in 4wd high you just pushed it forward into 'HI LOCK'. Then the light on the bottom side of the dash just above the shifter would come on to indicate that it is in 4wd (that is if the light is not burnt out or still there). 2wd high range is just in the 'HI' position.
Neutral unlocks everything. You use this if you have a PTO out put or would want to pull the vehicle 4 wheels down. It's just like putting the transmition in neutral, except when the t-case is in neutral the transmition does not spin when the wheels do.
Now again, I am not sure if there are different types of conversion kits, but the only way that mine would be in 4wd is if I was in the 'LOCK' position, be it 'HI' or 'LOW'. That is kind of the beauty of this tranny, if you are backing a trailer or something and just want to creep along, drop it down to 'LO', not 'LO LOCK', and it would be in 2wd low range and it will idle it's way up a mountain. It worked great for pulling grain wagons and such in the field.
