If you are working on the front axle ,you need to remove the front wheel bearing hub,then pull the axle shaft and stub out thru the knuckle. You usually destroy the big seal in the knuckle though .Then press the u-joints out an remove the stub.

Sorry, I should have added some info. I replaced my entire front axle recently and took out the axle shafts to sell. I have a buyer but he only wants the stubs so to save on shipping I'm going to remove them for him. I saw the big hammer method and also heard that you can rent a tool from a parts place. It's just one of those things I've never done.

You can either press out the u-joint cups or beat them out with a socket and a hammer.
Not sure if there's a c-clip on inner side of the cap.
On my '01 driveshaft, I couldn't push the caps in far enough to have the opposite cap come loose, so I have to cut the u-joint.
