Hi everybody... I'm hoping someone will have some simple yes/no answers for this one, cause I've gotten everthing but till now. I've got an '85 F150 with a well set up 9inch rear. But we just got a 16ft steel horse trailler and I think this is just about as much as that poor 9 inch can handle. I've located a dana 60 in a early 70's f250 that the owner will let go for a reasonable price. It looks like the spring pads will match up with my suspension, but I wanted to hear if anyone else has attempted a swap like this. Is it possible? Is there a better swap? I also noticed the brakes on the dana 60 are massive! Will my stock master cylinder be able to handle it? I know the D60 will require drive shaft modification. If anyone has any words of wisdom on this one they would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
That 9" should be very much up to the task of pulling that trailer. Its probably the strongest link in your drivetrain. If more pulling power is needed, a gear ratio change may be in order.
The Ford 9" axle assembly is probably the strongest production axle available. It's pinion is supported at both ends and stands up to alot of abuse offered from many appliciations. Before I would go to any trouble to change anything, like the other gentleman said, change ratio if more power is needed,it's a simple process.
LAST EDITED ON 26-Jul-00 AT 02:38 PM (EST)[p]I swapped a 9" out of my 82 and installed a Dana 70 in its place. My 9" has handled 35" gooseneck horsetrailers, car trailers and others. It held the weight fine. In fact the only reason I swapped to the Dana 70 was for the full floater. I didn't have a problem with the outer bearings, but after time they would have went. I felt it was easier to be safe than sorry.
The 70 bolted in the same as the 9" and no modifications were needed other than the U-bolts are a bit wider for the 60 than the 9". One thing you will run into is that the rear will be a 8-lug pattern, and the front will be 5. Being that the truck is an 85, you may be able to swap front knuckles as well. If you are needing anymore info on this, feel free to email me and I'll fill you in on what I had to do with mine.
just maybe someone is going over old posts for info...and may be able to use it
however, i needed to contact someone by email on an old post to gain information on a setup they had, and i needed to make 25 posts to email them
so i was putting in my two cents, in hopes that someone would be able to use that information provided they were reviewing old posts. maybe it will help someone, maybe it will not. i was just trying to put useful info while meeting the 25 post requirement to email another member
Ok, now that I've read some of the other old posts here, going by the 'useful info' you typed in the other posts you dug up, I'm taking back my 'post away' comment.
