1995 F150 5spd reverse grind.

I recently got a 1995 F150, 4x4, extended cab, long bed with the 5.0 5spd set-up. As far as 1st thru 5th, everything is ok. Going into reverse, it grinds like crazy and wont go in. I took the fork assembly off and inspected inside the tranny, no metal or damage that is apparent. I can also pop the tranny from 5th into reverse no problems (engine not running). Could it be a fork issue or a synchro issue? Also, if it sounds like replacing the tranny will happen, I heard the 5spd's behind the 5.8, while same on the outside, were more beefed up inside? If so, is the pilot bearing the same as well as the flywheel or would I have to retro-fit those? Thanks

If the tranny is in 5th it should not go into reverse unless brought over towards 1st as a safeguard to prevent an attempt to downshift into reverse instead of 4th. I would guess it is a synchro issue.

no synchros in reverse, his shift forks are not lineing up. should never be able to go from 5h to reverse without going back to nutrel. the fork for reverse is a different one than 5th

got to thinking could be the piece that your gearshift bolts to. put truck in nutreal, remove the shift boot, take out the 2 bolts from the shifter , set it asside, take out the 4 bolts on top around the shifter collar, and pull straight up. look at the legs on the shifter for wear, of if bent in any way. look down iside at the forks for same problem. if bad in trans, put it back together, and drive it until it breaks. if the shifter is bad replace it. make sure you have atf in this trans, not gear oil. good luck
