Hello i am new here and i have a question about my truck i just bought. i have a 98 ford f150 4x4 supercab short bed with the 5.4L. yesterday i got stuck in some mud and i noticed that my front tires weren't spinning why is that? it feels like the 4x4 in engaged and it says its on. do i need manual locking hubs?
It's because the front also has a differential. The other side was probably spinning. You could get a locker for the front. Manual hubs will make no difference.
If neither was spinning then chances are one or both of your auto hobs don't work. Common problem, theres a way to verify that they are broken but I'm not sure how. Replace them with manual hubs and you will likely never have another problem for a long time.
ok so before i go and buy hubs i would like to make sure this is the problem. so if anyone could let me know how to make sure that's it please let me know i really appreciate it!
There is no need for hubs, the front axles turn with the front wheels all the time. The axles go into the front center section that has the open diff in it. The only way to make both fronts spin is put a LS or a locker in the front end.
you truck has no where to put or no need for lock outs
if neither was spinning then there a possibility that your vacuum lockouts in the center section arent working. You probably have a cracked vacuum line going down to the pumpkin.
well you would need several tools to do it, and if you have never done it before then you probably dont have them. The front axle is a Ford 8.8. Ebay is a place to find them. Im not sure what websites sell good off road equipment. Detroiet lockers are good. Im looking to put a stock LS from the rear of the truck to the front. and putting a locker in the rear.
There are lots of places to get a locker, it all depends on your price range and what your looking for. Some can be easy to put in, and some can be hard. Again, it depends on the locker.
If neither tire was spinning then you've probably got an issue with your four wheel drive.
A locker shouldn't be your first thing to jump to if your four wheel drive isn't working at all. I really don't know much about auto hubs, but the first thing I would suggest is taht you need to check your vacume lines to make sure they are all good.
ok so i got under the truck and watched the vacuum motor while my bro turned the 4X4 on and i saw it move but not much by looking at it i would think it should have moved more but what do i know...so can anyone tell me how far it should go? and also my vent hose just runs up on top of my fender and stops is it suppose to be like that?
ok i went out and bought a vacuum tester and tested the vacuum motor and it wont hold a vacumm.. so i went to the ford house here and they didn't even know what i was talking about and took him about 20 mins to find the dang thing and then he told me that will be $300 and i laughed and walked away. i came home and looked on ebay and found a web site called am-autoparts.com and was wondering if anyone ever heard of them?
oh and while i was under my truck i noted my cv boot on my passenger side front axle was broke so i had to replace that and that was a crap load of work...i am not wondering if i made a good choice to go with a 4x4....
