so i spent all day in the snow working on my buddys 02 7.3 manual with 95000 on it and it will not start. had to replace the starter due to the cylinoid plastic part breaking, anyone know where to get one cheap? so when trying to crank it it will turn over smooth and it isgetting fuel to the bowl but no smoke out the exhaust except white but it is cold outside. the engine belt sometimes turns and sometimes stopswhen cranking dont know why. any help is apreciated i will cheack this every few miunutes if more info is needed or i getideas to try.when pluged in it will start in the past but still hard from what hetoldme. couldntplugit in till about half hour ago.
If you're getting white smoke out the tail pipe while cranking, try shorting the 2 big posts on the GPR with a screwdriver for 30 seconds, then try starting.
The belt not turning does not sound good. Maybe he's got he wrong size belt on there? If the belt doesn't turn, then the alternator is not charging the batteries properly. If the voltage gets too low, the IDM won't fire the injectors as Jim said.
Place the screwdriver across the 2 big posts (one is covered with a rubber boot in this pic) with the key off. Then get in and turn the key all the way to start like it was a gasser (ignore the wait to start light).
It means it's time to replace the GPR. That relay is what sends power to the glow plugs. If the relay is bad, it's like starting the truck with no glow plugs at all. The screwdriver trick simply bypasses the relay and sends power to the glow plugs through the shaft of the screwdriver.
well it came close to starting sputtered around 250 to 500 rpm blowing black and white smoke everywhere and i even had it hooked to my truck to jump since the batteries are going but itonly did that for maybe 10 or20seconds anddied will try again tomarow. howlong can i jump a vehical before it causes a problem and can i do the glow plug trick longer or will they burn up?
How cold is it outside there? Was there any starting or stalling problems before you worked on the starter? You may have other issues going on here.
The belt not moving still concerns me, but leaving the jumper cables on won't hurt anything, and the PCM will command the glow plugs on for up to 120 seconds depending on conditions, so leaving the screwdriver on a little longer won't hurt anything. Maybe try holding it on for a minute and see how that does.
cold 15 degrees. but got it going this morning and am sure it is the gpr now with the screwdriver trick working. but once running this 02 is fast like really fast. runs as good stock as my 99 chiped on a lower setting can anyoneexplain this to me as to why it goes so good?
Guzzle has a nice write up, I would replace it with the Stancor GPR, I just ordered on as the original one just kicked the bucket. 44.79 is what your looking at, and at the price it's well worth it.
