My car is a chrysler sebring. My o2 sensor is damaged, and I don't have the cash for a new one until Friday. (None in junk yard either)
I sealed off the hole with a drain plug in the mean time so the car does not sound like a lawn mower lol.
It is still ok to drive like that right? I know I will get poor mileage and my check engine light is on, but it's not going to hurt it to drive it is it?
It won't hurt to drive it -- and the mileage and emissions will probably still be OK.
The rest of the sensors tell the engine computer what's going on, and it adjusts the fuel and spark accordingly.
The O2 sensor reports on how well things are really going ( rich or lean). Various conditions and bad parts can make the computer's estimate incorrect -- that's when the O2 sensor comes in. The computer uses it to adjust for actual conditions. However, it's usually pretty close.
The only problem you could have is if you have another severe problem that the computer is covering up by adjusting the fuel trim. If it starts to run like crap, you probably better park it. But then you'll also want to know what your real problem is.
I agree with the other poster. It shouldnt hurt it to drive it because the ECU is programed to let the engine run when any of the sensors are broken or not working. Might be hard to find a good used one. I think I got one at autozone on the cheap side...about 40 bucks
